Management Team

Thomas D. Willis, Ph.D., CEO
Dr. Willis has spearheaded ParAllele's successful licensing and financing activities since the company's founding. Prior to founding ParAllele, Dr. Willis served as Associate Director of the Stanford Genome Technology Center at Stanford University, directing that institution's technology development efforts. Dr. Willis received his doctorate in Physics from Stanford University in 1996.

Elizabeth Krodel, Ph.D., Senior Vice President of Product Development and Operations
Elizabeth joined ParAllele from a 20 year career in IVD product development with Bayer, Chiron, and Ciba Corning Diagnostics. Most recently she was responsible for the development of FDA approved assays for viral load for HIV, HBV, and HCV viruses, as well as associated instrumentation and software. She was also responsible for a genotyping kit based on sequencing for HIV drug susceptibility and resistance. Prior product development experience included system integration for a fully automated immunoassay analyzer and development of immunoassays for hormones, cancer markers, and cardio markers. She led technical due diligence on several co-company development projects and a major acquisition. She holds a Ph.D in biochemistry from Brandeis University and a certificate from the Executive Management Training program at Notre Dame University.

Aaron Solomon, Vice President of Business Development
Aaron Solomon has over 17 years of sales and business development experiences in the life science industry. Prior to joining ParAllele in early 2004, he was Vice President of Business Development at Odyssey Thera where he established collaborations with top pharmaceutical companies to study protein signaling effects of pre-clinical compounds. Previously, Mr. Solomon was Senior Director of Business Development at Incyte Genomics where he initiated, negotiated and managed gene discovery and licensing programs with many of the top pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Aaron Solomon holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences from University of California, Irvine.

Robert F. Smith, Vice President of Corporate Development
Robert F. Smith joined ParAllele in April of 2004. Previously, Mr. Smith was Vice President and General Manager of Thomson Delphion, an on-line intellectual property services business of The Thomson Corporation. Mr. Smith joined Thomson when it acquired Delphion, Inc. in 2002, where he was the Vice President, Administration and General Counsel. Mr. Smith was one of the initial employees of Delphion, joining in the fall of 2000. Previously, Mr. Smith was Senior Counsel and Director of the Law Department for Motorola's Life Sciences business in Northbrook, IL. Mr. Smith joined Motorola in 1997, and held several positions in Motorola's Law Department supporting various Motorola business units.
Mr. Smith earned his bachelor's of science degree in urban planning from the University of Virginia, graduating in 1975. He earned his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1988.

Andrew Boudreau, Senior Director of Informatics
Prior to joining ParAllele, Mr. Boudreau worked for Operon Technologies, a manufacturer of synthetic DNA, where he directed the development and operation of all software and information systems used in Operon's 24 x 7 manufacturing environment. After Operon's purchase by Qiagen, NV, Mr. Boudreau led successful efforts to replicate Operon's software systems in new facilities in Germany, Japan, and Germantown, Maryland, and co-directed the integration of Operon's systems with Qiagen's worldwide SAP system. Prior to working in biotechnology, Mr. Boudreau gained extensive experience with different software start-ups, including Abacus Concepts, an award-winning statistical analysis software maker, which was acquired by the SAS Institute.

J. Clark Mason, Ph.D., Senior Director of Product Marketing
Prior to joining ParAllele, Dr. Mason has over 14 years of sales, product management and marketing experience in the life science industry. Primarily working for Applied Biosystems, he was responsible for the commercial launch of a number of key products that addressed genotyping and gene expression applications and market opportunities. Additionally, he was responsible for the licensing of associated key technologies. Dr. Mason holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Queens University Belfast and is an author on 2 issued worldwide patents and >20 peer-reviewed publications and at various times has held various Clinical, NIH, Travelling and Honorary Fellowships at Queens University Belfast (UK) the University of Chicago (USA), University of Manchester (UK) and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UK).

Malek Faham, MD, Ph.D., Director of Research
Prior to the founding of ParAllele BioScience, Inc., Dr. Faham was a research associate at the Stanford Genome Technology Center as well as a Psychiatry Resident at the University of California San Francisco. In 2001 Dr. Faham was awarded the Veterans Affairs Psychiatric Research/Neuroscience fellowship as well as Molecular Approaches to Psychiatry Fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Faham received his BA from University of Maryland, MD, Ph.D. and psychiatry residency training from University of California San Francisco.

Ron Fitzgerald, Director of Reagent Production
With over 16 years of manufacturing and operations experience, Mr. Fitzgerald has worked at many well-known biotech companies in the Bay Area. Prior to joining ParAllele BioScience Mr. Fitzgerald was the Director of Manufacturing at Zyomyx where he established manufacturing procedures for its 30-plex-protein array system. Mr. Fitzgerald also played essential roles in designing and implementing manufacturing systems for scaling products from research and development to commercial distribution at GeneTrace Systems of Alameda and Chiron Corporation of Emeryville. Mr. Fitzgerald holds a Master of Science in Physiology and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from University of California, Davis.

Maneesh Jain, Ph.D., Director of Strategic Marketing and Alliances
Dr. Jain led the initial development and commercial validation of new products after the company's founding in 2001. Prior to this, Maneesh Jain led the development of systems for high throughput sequencing and genotyping at the Stanford Genome Technology Center. These systems included instrumentation, software and biochemical assays and played a key role in the founding of the company. Maneesh Jain is an author on 4 issued and pending US patents and 20 peer-reviewed publications. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University (1996) and a B.S. in Engineering and Physics from the California Institute of Technology.

Hywel Jones, Ph.D., Director of Statistical Genetics
Dr. Jones brings extensive scientific and business experience to ParAllele having worked in both the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. He has also acted as a consultant in the life sciences venture capital industry. In academia, he worked at Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the UK and at Stanford University in California. Dr. Jones holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in England

Karen Kirk, Director of Finance and Administration
Ms. Kirk has served as our Director of Finance and Administration since October 2003. Prior to joining ParAllele, Ms. Kirk was the Chief Financial Officer for Computer Technology Solutions in Houston, TX. From 1998 to 2001, she was Controller at Genometrix, Incorporated. Her fifteen years of experience include financial and accounting positions working primarily in start up and late stage development companies. Ms. Kirk began her career as a CPA with the Entrepreneurial Advisory Group of Coopers and Lybrand, and obtained her Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Texas at Austin, in 1990.
